It offers an excellent opportunity for both employers facing labour shortages and migrants seeking long-term opportunities in Australia.
What is the South Australia DAMA?
The Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) is a formal arrangement between the Australian Government and a regional state or territory authority. In this case, the agreement is between the Department of Home Affairs and the Government of South Australia. It aims to address specific workforce needs in regional and remote areas. It does so by offering more flexible options than standard skilled migration programs.
South Australia has two DAMAs in place:

Key Features of South Australia Regional DAMA
Now let’s have a look at some prominent features of South Australia Regional DAMA:-
- Wider Occupation List
This DAMA includes over 70 occupations, many of which are not available under the standard skilled migration programs. These roles span across industries like agriculture, hospitality, health care, manufacturing, and construction.
- Concessions on Age and English Language Proficiency
South Australia’s DAMA offers concessions on standard visa requirements. Those are as follows:-
- Age limit can be extended beyond the usual 45 years for certain pathways.
- English language requirements may be lowered, especially for semi-skilled positions. This further makes it more accessible for non-native English speakers.
- Pathway to Permanent Residency
One of the biggest advantages of the South Australia Regional DAMA is that it provides a pathway to PR (Permanent Residency). It does so via visas such as the subclass 494 DAMA visa and the subclass 186 DAMA PR visa.
DAMA Visa Process in South Australia
The application process of DAMA visa in South Australia involves the following steps:-
- Employer Endorsement
The employer must first apply for endorsement from the South Australian Government.
- Labour Agreement Request
Once endorsed, the employer submits a DAMA labour agreement request to the Department of Home Affairs.
- Nomination And Visa Application
After the labour agreement is approved, the employer can nominate the worker, who then applies for the appropriate DAMA visa.
This multi-step process ensures that the visa is only granted when genuine labour shortages exist.
